Lisa Allmendinger, founder and publisher of Chelsea Update, announced her retirement after 14 years, citing health reasons and, as she put it simply in her announcement on March 15, “The time has come for me to retire.”

For more than a decade, Lisa has been the driving force behind one of the most consistent and trusted sources of local news in Washtenaw County. Since launching Chelsea Update in 2012, she built it into a daily chronicle of community life, publishing more than 30,000 stories and personally reviewing every one before it went live.

In doing so, she set a high bar for community-focused journalism: accurate, deeply connected, and relentlessly committed to the people it serves. As Chelsea Update writer Crystal Hayduk puts it, “Lisa is solid local news. She knows things, she knows people, and she is passionate about Chelsea.”

Lisa’s idea for the Chelsea Update was conceived while covering the 2012 Dexter Tornado for the Ann Arbor News. “It dawned on me in the midst of that national story that I could do this better,” Lisa tells readers in her announcement. “I really didn’t need a whole bunch of editors mucking with my stories. At that point in my long career in newspapers, I’d done about every job in various newsrooms so I already had the hands-on experience.”

While Lisa’s retirement marks the end of an era and Chelsea Update stopped publishing on April 5, it is not the end of hyper-local news coverage in Chelsea. Her team is already moving forward with a new venture, The Chelsea Post, led by longtime collaborator Leslie Surel and supported by familiar contributors from Chelsea Update.

The Chelsea Post will carry that work forward, with a daily newsletter and social media presence for readers who want to stay connected. More information is available at https://thechelseapost.com/

Lisa’s legacy is not just the thousands of stories she published, but the standard she set. Community journalism is stronger because of her work, and her impact will continue to be felt in Chelsea for years to come.
