Ann Arbor Included in Expanded State of Emergency as Severe Weather Hits Michigan

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has expanded Michigan’s state of emergency to include several areas impacted by severe weather, including the city of Ann Arbor.

The updated declaration adds Eaton, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Mecosta, and Muskegon counties, along with the cities of Ann Arbor and Kalamazoo, following days of heavy rain, rapid snowmelt, high winds, and tornado activity. The conditions have led to flooding, rising river levels, and damage to roads, homes, and businesses.

“Today, I’m adding seven additional counties and cities to our state of emergency declaration. This declaration will help these areas with recovery efforts as they work to clean up after severe weather damaged homes, roads, and businesses,” said Governor Whitmer. “My administration will continue to work with local emergency managers over the weekend and monitor water levels across the state. The forecast for next week is looking better, which should provide some breathing room for first responders, but we aren’t out of the woods yet. Let’s continue to stay vigilant, and we will get through this together.”

Officials say flooded and impassable roads have complicated rescue and evacuation efforts, while additional rainfall could worsen conditions. First responders continue working statewide to manage the impacts.

The state has activated its Emergency Operations Center and is coordinating response efforts through the Michigan State Police. The declaration allows affected communities, including Ann Arbor, to access state resources and financial assistance for emergency response and infrastructure repairs.
