Dexter Township has its list of road projects for 2026, as it reached an agreement at its April 21 township board meeting with the Washtenaw County Road Commission.
The agreement will see $289,000 worth of road work done with Dexter Township contributing 146,821 and the county’s local matching funds at $142,179. The Sun Times News followed up with Dexter Township Supervisor Lonnie Scott to ask about the agreement.
“This will allow us to do our planned maintenance and maximize our match with the county to repair 100 percent of our unpaved neighborhood roads,” Scott said. “We also will be reinstating our Local Roads committee to be able to create a policy to look at the best way to maximize our future county road match funds to tackle our paved neighborhood roads. The ability to do this is a result of the board being dedicated to getting Township roads into better condition.”
The reason behind the township looking to the county with help with roads is that under statute the township does not have jurisdiction over the local roads, “that responsibility falls to the County.”
“However, Townships obviously have a vested interest for their roads to be in good condition for their residents. For that reason townships collaborate with county for road repairs,” Scott said. “In Washtenaw County, that’s through the local road match program. This year the match was doubled and Dexter Township budgeted to use the entire available match.”
