SUMMARY:Jonathan Brown Percussion Masterclass
DESCRIPTION:Finding the Percussionist’s Craft\nA masterclass for intermediate & advanced percussion students in Lenawee County.\nOpen to students from school percussion programs and independent students alike.\n\n\n\n\nMasterclass\nJoin acclaimed percussionist and educator Jonathan Brown for an immersive masterclass exploring percussion as both rhythm and narrative. Finding the Percussionist’s Craft looks beyond technique to examine how percussion instruments – hand to hand\, mallet to bar\, stick to skin—have always carried culture\, movement\, and human expression. \nThis masterclass is designed for students participating in school percussion programs and for independent and privately studying percussionists. It explores a wide range of instruments\, including marimba\, vibraphone\, xylophone\, frame drum\, drum set\, auxiliary percussion\, and found sounds\, inviting students to consider how each voice contributes to musical storytelling. Drawing from classical\, contemporary\, popular\, and global traditions\, students will explore percussion not just as timekeeping\, but as a living\, breathing musical language. \nThis program’s cost is underwritten by a generous gift\, allowing students to participate at little or no cost. Donations are greatly appreciated and help support future educational programs at Macon Creek.

SUMMARY:Dexter Community Orchestra at 20 - a Celebration of the Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Individual members of the Dexter Community Orchestra will hold the spotlight at the DCO’s festive twentieth anniversary concert Sunday\, March 8\, 4 pm at Dexter High School’s Center for the Performing Arts. \n                  To celebrate 20 years of music-making in Dexter\, music director David Schultz wanted to showcase the talents of some of the orchestra’s best players. Three soloists will perform movements from concertos by Weber\, Saint-Saens and Dragonetti. And each section of the orchestra will have their chance to shine in Britten’s “The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra”. This piece introduces the instruments\, one at a time\, and ends with a stirring demonstration of how the individual components of the orchestra come together to create the overall symphonic sound. Guest artist Stephen West will serve as narrator and guide for this musical tour. \n                  Soloists will include principal clarinetist Ralph Katz\, pianist Paul Shen (who also plays violin in the orchestra)\, and principal bassist Kirstin Brown. Mr. West\, a bass-baritone\, will also sing an aria by Mozart. A brass ensemble will open the program with Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man”. And the full orchestra will present Brahms’ rousing “Academic Festival Overture”. \n                  This is a once-in-20-years opportunity to hear the full range of the DCO’s virtuosity\, so don’t miss it! All DCO concerts are free and open to the public. No ticket is required; seating is first-come-first-serve\, so plan to arrive early for this memorable event. Donations to support the orchestra are gratefully accepted.

DESCRIPTION:Kerrytown Concert House is proud to partner with the Southeastern Michigan Jazz Association (SEMJA) to celebrate Detroit jazz historian and author\, Lars Bjorn\, at this year’s Ron Brooks Award Concert. Bjorn has been widely celebrated\, together with his co-author Jim Gallert\, for Before Motown\, the pioneering widely praised first major history of jazz in Detroit\, the culmination of years of research\, including numerous in-depth musician interviews that are now archived for future use. For many years\, Lars was a sociology professor at the University of Michigan\, Dearborn\, teaching courses on Detroit and its music. To mark the occasion\, an outstanding lineup of area jazz musicians will take the stage in tribute\, performing the music that Bjorn has spent a lifetime championing. SUMMARY:A Natural Dye Pop-Up Workshop: Kitchen Dyes & Shibori
DESCRIPTION:Join NDCo. at Agricole Farm Stop for a hands-on workshop to explore the art of natural dyeing using ingredients from the kitchen. Participants will learn a shibori resist technique to create a unique design on a vintage flour sack towel that will be dyed with either yellow onion skins\, red onion skins\, or avocado skins–your choice! \nShibori is a resist technique that looks similar to tie-dye; however\, it has been around since the 6th century. Natural dyeing dates back even further to the year 2600 BC. You will have the option to pick one dye to dye your towel–yellow onion skins for a golden yellow\, red onion skins for a mossy green\, or avocado skins for a pale blush coral. There will be time for Q&A and discussion on fugitive versus reliable kitchen dyes. You’ll leave with a beautiful naturally dyed textile and the knowledge to continue experimenting at home.
