SUMMARY:Spring Sounds at the River - A Night Hike at Leslee Niethammer Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Spring Sounds at the River \nA Night Hike at Leslee Niethammer Preserve \nMARCH 21\, 2026 at 7 PM \n  \n[Saline\, Michigan\, March 21\, 2026 – 7 PM] Join us at the Leslee Niethammer Saline River Preserve for a nocturnal hike to listen and look for early spring singers. This is the time of year that spring critters start to emerge. Spring Peeper frogs are one of these. \n  \nWe will kick off with a brief introduction to frogs of Michigan and frog calls followed by a hike. Bring your flashlight as we’ll be hiking right around dusk. \n  \nAll ages welcome! We will meet in the parking lot and head down to the meadow at 7 PM. \n  \nFriends of the Saline River are the stewards of the Leslee Niethammer Saline River Preserve. The Preserve was established in 2016 to help protect the natural ecological diversity and heritage of Washtenaw County. It is named to honor Leslee Niethammer\, long-time director of the Saline District Library and an active community member. We maintain beautiful walking paths with benches\, informational signs\, views of the Saline River\, and wildflowers. \n  \nLeslee Niethammer Saline River Preserve \n9000 S. SUMMARY:Rhythmic Dimensions: An interactive performance with Jonathan Brown
DESCRIPTION:Jonathon Brown presents an intimate and expansive evening of music built on close listening\, bold collaboration\, and room for discovery. Centered on percussion\, the program explores a wide palette of sound through instruments like handpan\, marimba\, vibraphone\, and drums\, opening up textures and rhythms that feel both refined and surprising. This concert highlights music as a living\, flexible space—where precision and imagination meet\, and where percussion leads the way into new territory. Expect music that’s thoughtful\, grounded\, and full of possibility. \nJonathan Brown is an accomplished percussionist and educator with over two decades of teaching experience and more than 15 years as a professional freelance performer. He maintains a private percussion studio that has supported students of all ages\, with an emphasis on technical development\, style\, and practical musicianship. His pedagogical approach bridges classical percussion with contemporary\, popular\, and collaborative performance. \nIn addition to private instruction\, Jonathan served as an adjunct professor at Oakland Community College\, teaching History of Popular Music. He is an active clinician and has presented percussion masterclasses throughout the United States as well as internationally in Argentina and Colombia\, working with students in both academic and community-based settings. \nAs a performer\, Jonathan has built a diverse career across orchestral\, chamber\, and popular music genres. He toured the United States for six years as the drummer for the Ragbirds and has performed with the Jackson Symphony Orchestra for four seasons\, while also serving as a regular substitute with the Toledo Symphony. Some additional performance (as well as recording) credits include Telesonic 9000\, TJ Zindle and the Powerlines\, Jess Merritt\, The Willo Collective\, Portland Percussion Group\, Men On Horseback\, Khemia Ensemble\, and more. One of Jonathan’s newer projects is a commission and recording of Alejandro Viñao’s Patterns and Form (2025) with the Portland Percussion Group. A commercial recording of Patterns and Form is scheduled for release in February 2026. \nJonathan holds a Masters in Music and Masters in Chamber Music from the University of Michigan\, as well as a Bachelors in Music Education from Central Michigan University.

SUMMARY:Olivia Van Goor Sings the Music of Anita O’Day
DESCRIPTION:Olivia Van Goor returns to Kerrytown Concert House for her third appearance\, this time honoring one of her greatest vocal inspirations: Anita O’Day. A self-described “song stylist\,” Anita brought a bold\, innovative sound to jazz that captivated Olivia early in her career. Through iconic recordings like “Tea for Two” and “Sweet Georgia Brown\,” as well as hidden gems such as “Waiter\, Make Mine Blues” and “Hershey Bar\,” Olivia will trace Anita’s remarkable journey—a story of both triumph and turbulence. Joined by a stellar jazz trio\, Olivia invites you to experience the legacy of a woman who defied the mold of the typical “girl singer” and reshaped the sound of vocal jazz forever. \nOlivia Van Goor – Vocals\nScott Gwinnell – Piano\nReuben Stump – Bass\nDave Zwolinski – Drums

SUMMARY:AQUATIC INSECTS: ECOLOGY AND USE IN DETERMINING STREAM WATER QUALITY
DESCRIPTION:Aquatic insects\, such as mayflies\, caddisflies\, stone flies\, and dragonflies\, are cold-blooded organisms that mostly live on stream bottoms\, in gravel\, fallen tree leaves\, and woody debris.  While most other insects are dormant during the winter months\, most Michigan aquatic insects are active winter feeders which metamorphose into adults in the spring and complete their life cycle.  Join Hannah-Maria Jacques\, Ph.D.\, from the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology\, and Sumengen Sutomo\, DrPH\, from Bangung Indonesia Foundation\, for this informative presentation. We will sample two streams to show examples of the local aquatic insect fauna.  Such insects are used by states and federal government to determine the biological integrity of the stream or lake being sampled.  The program is all outdoors\, so dress for the weather.  A hand lens\, or magnifying glass\, will be helpful.  We will meet at the lower parking lot and carpool to the sampling sites from there. \nCost: $2/person or $5/family. Eddy Discovery Center\, 17030 Bush Rd. in the Waterloo Recreation Area near Chelsea.  Program limited to 15 participants.  The building is closed so program will be entirely outdoors.  Please register for this program by emailing waterloonha@gmail.com with your name\, phone number and number of people attending.

SUMMARY:Brooklyn Meets Ann Arbor: New Music & Improvisation – Tropos + Fortune Teller Trio (feat. Yuma Uesaka & Kenji Lee)
DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn-based improviser-composer collective Tropos—featuring University of Michigan ’14 alum Yuma Uesaka—returns to Ann Arbor for a double bill with Kenji Lee’s Fortune Teller Trio. Rooted in the improvisational spirit of jazz and creative music while embracing the formal rigor and timbral curiosity of contemporary concert music\, Tropos brings what critic Nate Chinen describes as an “engaging balance of precision and daring.”  The set will feature new works alongside selections from Switches\, developed through a workshop process with mentor Darius Jones. Fortune Teller Trio’s music similarly balances craft and spontaneity\, making for an evening of thoughtfully composed forms\, audacious improvisation\, and shared musical values. Fortune Teller Trio features Kenji Lee (tenor saxophone)\, Andy Peck (double bass)\, and Jonathan Barahal Taylor (drums). \nSet 1 – Fortune Teller Trio\nSet 2 – Tropos
