Described as a fully involved shed fire, Scio Township Firefighters responded to a fire off of Baker Road on April 19 that caused some serious damage.
The Sun Times News followed up with Scio Township Fire Chief Andrew Houde about the emergency call that Sunday afternoon.
Houde said Scio firefighters were dispatched just before 4:30 p.m. to a reported structure fire. When crews got close to the scene, they saw a large column of smoke and requested mutual aid assistance, Houde said.
The fire was in two outbuildings behind a home on Baker, which had spread to surrounding equipment. Houde said crews found the outbuilding mostly destroyed and several cars, a trailer, and several pieces of construction/lawn equipment on fire. He said they deployed two hose lines to extinguish the fire.
One outbuilding contained approximately 70 young chickens, none of which survived, according to Houde.
Scio firefighters were assisted on scene by Dexter and Chelsea firefighters. As there is no municipal water in this area, Houde said several water tankers brought water to the scene to fight the fire.
The official cause is undetermined, but Houde said they suspect the fire was started by warming devices used for the chickens.
