Amid growing concern from residents about heavy truck traffic and safety along Michigan Avenue, Saline Police Chief Marlene Radzik is reaffirming her department’s commitment to enforcing traffic laws, particularly as construction activity increases in the area.

Residents have raised alarms about large trucks running red lights and creating hazardous conditions, concerns underscored by recent photos showing semis traveling through intersections against traffic signals.

Saline Police Chief Marlene Radzik said they are aware of the situation and are taking steps to address it. Chief Radzik reaffirmed her department’s statement from March 30.

“We understand many in our community have noticed increased traffic along Michigan Avenue during the current data center construction phase,” Radzik said. “We want to acknowledge these concerns and share the steps we are taking to prioritize safety for everyone, residents, businesses and visitors alike.”

According to the city, the surge in truck traffic is tied to ongoing construction, bringing a “significant increase in daily construction related traffic.”

In response, Radzik and other law enforcement partners are stepping up enforcement.

“This includes increased patrol presence from local officers, as well as coordination with county and state law enforcement to enhance traffic enforcement in and around the affected areas,” she said.

Radzik emphasized that enforcement is not limited to city police alone. Multiple agencies, including Pittsfield Township, Michigan State Police, and the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office, are involved due to the corridor spanning several jurisdictions.

The construction contractor is also being held accountable.

“In addition, the construction contractor has committed to enforcing rigorous safety requirements for all drivers involved in this project, including taking action against any violations,” Radzik added.

Despite these measures, residents continue to express unease, particularly about trucks appearing to ignore traffic signals, a concern illustrated in photos taken at Michigan Avenue intersections showing large vehicles proceeding through red lights while other traffic is stopped.

Radzik stressed that safety remains the top priority: “While construction activity may bring temporary disruptions such as delays and increase noise, these efforts are focused on maintaining a safe environment for all who travel through and live in our community.”

Authorities are urging residents to report dangerous behavior when they see it.

“We encourage you to please call 911, if you observe any unsafe driving which requires immediate attention,” Radzik said. “For non-emergency questions or concerns, Residents are encouraged to contact the Saline Police Department directly if the offense is occurring within the city limits.”

The Chief emphasized, “We will continue to monitor conditions closely and work with all partners to address community concerns as the project moves forward.”
