Yard Waste Pick Up Returns in Chelsea, Dexter, Milan, Saline

Yard waste pickup is back in Chelsea, Dexter, Milan and Saline, with seasonal collection services starting this month.

Chelsea

Leaf Pick Up

A one-time leaf collection will run April 20-30. Residents should rake leaves to the curb lawn area for pick up.

Brush Pickup

Monthly pickup begins April 13, but crews will remove different sized materials at various times depending on which equipment they are using. 

  • Dime-sized or smaller sticks should be placed in biodegradable bags or containers that can be dumped. 
  • Larger branches, up to 4-inches in diameter, should be stacked with cut ends aligned. 
  • No roots, stumps, dirt, weeds, grass clippings, sod, plants, yard rakings should be included with brush or garbage.

Drop-off options
Residents can drop off leaves, weeds, plants, yard rakings and grass clippings to the compost pile available at the Solid Waste Department. The service is free for residents and costs non-residents $1 per bag. Residents who prefer can also drop off brush to the Solid Waste Department on Werkner Road weekly Wednesday through Saturdays, with some changes on holidays.

Dexter

Yard Waste

  • Pickup runs from April through December on regular trash days. Materials must be in paper compost bags or in trash cans marked with an approved sticker, available at the City Office. The bags are available at the local hardware store. Compost is picked up on the same schedule as garbage collection.

Brush pickup

  • The Department of Public Works provides for the collection of brush, branches and leaves. The city requires all limbs, branches and brush to be stacked neatly at the curb with but-ends facing the same direction. Piles are limited to 10 feet in length. Individual limbs may not exceed 4 inches in diameter at base, 2 inches at leafy end. Limbs smaller than 1 inch must be bagged.
  • Limbs, branches and brush from complete tree maintenance by a homeowner are the responsibility of the homeowner or their contracted professional.

Saline

Yard waste pick up

  • Pick up runs from April 9 through November on trash days. The city will pick up a total of six containers of waste or bundles of branches per week. Waste should be in brown waste bags or reusable cans marked “Yard Waste” with permanent marker or a sticker obtained from city hall.

Accepted:  Grass clippings, leaves, garden debris, shrubs, fruit and vegetable waste and branches tied and bundled.

Not accepted:  sod, pet waste, loose branches, bags or cans over 60 pounds, tree stumps, dirt, rocks, trash or plastic bags.

Large branch pick up

  • Branches over four-feet long but less than six-feet, and not greater than 6-inches in diameter require scheduling through Waste Management. To schedule your pick up, call Waste Management at (866) 797-9018.

Milan

Yard waste pick up

  • Milan will pick up yard waste placed at the curb every Tuesday from April through November. Yard waste must be placed in disposable paper bags or in 32 gallon or smaller containers marked as yard waste.

Brush pickup

  • The city chipper will pick up brush trimmings 4-inches in diameter or less placed on the curb May through September, weather allowing. The chipper is scheduled to go out once every week, but pick up and routes will be scheduled around other city work commitments.

Note:  Yard waste cannot be landfilled under Michigan law.
