Oscar’s Sports & Grill in Saline and Dexter’s Raterman Bread Haus & Bistro will soon be in national spotlight. The restaurants will both be separately featured on America’s Best Restaurants, a national media and marketing company focusing on bringing attention to local, independently-owned restaurants.
Oscar’s Bar & Grill
Open since 2006, the popular restaurant was operated by Oscar and Maria Cotero, and ownership was transferred to James Scalzi last year. Scalzi brought extensive restaurateur experience to the Oscar’s concept, but aimed to keep much of the menu the same while adding new items.
The menu offers traditional Mexican family recipes from the Coteros, specialty pizza and calzones, soups and salads, appetizers, dinner entrees, sandwiches and burgers. Popular items that may be featured on the episode include the ‘El Gordo’ Burrito, named for Oscar, with a choice of beef or chicken topped with both red and green sauces and cheese; the Italian Stallion sub sandwich, a favorite of Scalzi’s; and the BBQ pulled pork sandwich, house-braised roasted pork tossed in house barbecue sauce and topped with Granny Smith apple slaw.
Oscar’s Sports & Grill won The Sun Times News People’s Choice award for ‘Best Local Bar/Brewery’ in 2024.
America’s Best Restaurants will be filming on location on Friday August 29th from 2 pm to 5 pm EST. The press is invited to attend. The restaurant’s finished episode premiere date will be announced on their Facebook page and will be featured on America’s Best Restaurants’ website at https://americasbestrestaurants.com/rests/michigan/oscars-sports-and-grill.
Oscar’s Sports & Grill is located at 6877 S State Rd Ste D, Saline, MI 48176, in the strip mall.
Raterman Bread Haus & Bistro
Raterman, a former mechanical engineer, opened his namesake restaurant in August 2023 after perfecting his sourdough technique and gaining a strong following.
“I fell in love with the [fermentation] process and the fact that you’re really not in control of anything. You’re just kind of facilitating timelines,” Raterman says.
He began by selling out of his home to friends and at farmers’ markets and eventually began working out of Washtenaw Food Hub, selling to area stores. He reached capacity at the Food Hub, making five hundred loaves a week plus other items like soft pretzels.
Raterman Bread Haus and Bistro has a streamlined menu of breads, pizza, ‘power bowls’, sandwiches and a dedicated vegan menu, a testimony to the restaurant’s inclusivity and emphasis on healthy eating. They also utilize a near-zero waste system, composting kitchen scraps for farm animals, and source items from local farms as much as possible.
Raterman is located at 8080 Grand St, Dexter, MI 48130.
