The Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners has approved a $326,284 grant to support the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office Secondary Road Patrol and Traffic Accident Prevention Program.
The annual grant, administered through the Michigan State Police Office of Highway Safety Planning, covers the period from Oct. 1, 2025, through Sept. 30, 2026. County documents show the funding will support two deputies assigned full time to Secondary Road Patrol activities.
Services provided through the program include patrolling and monitoring traffic violations, enforcing criminal laws observed during patrol, investigating motor vehicle crashes and providing emergency assistance to people on or near county roads.
Because the sheriff’s office serves much of the county outside cities and villages, the funding has broad relevance across Washtenaw County, including townships and other areas where sheriff’s deputies are often the primary law enforcement presence on local roads. County records state the sheriff’s office is the primary agency responsible for providing certain services on primary county roads and local roads outside cities and villages.
A cover memo from Sheriff Alyshia Dyer’s office says the sheriff’s office has participated in the program for several years. The memo states the county’s total allocation for the current grant period is $326,284.
The total cost of assigning two deputies full time to the program is listed at $378,274, including salary, overtime, fringe benefits and vehicle expenses. County documents show the remaining $51,990 is expected to be covered through the annual revenue contract with the Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation Commission.
The resolution was first taken up by commissioners March 4, then approved March 18 in a 9-0 vote.
