Big Reds Softball Comes Out Strong

In a friendly scrimmage against Skyline and even with weather playing a part in the game against Bedford, Milan looked ready for the season.

This past week the Milan Girls Varsity Softball team first played a home game, a friendly scrimmage, against Skyline and then traveled to Temperance Bedford for what was supposed to be a double header. The Sun Times News followed up with Milan Coach Micah Higa.

In the scrimmage on March 24th, Higa said Milan looked sharp and in control from the start, “rolling to a decisive win” against the Eagles of Skyline 19-1.

Higa said Milan looked “strong in all phases, big offensive innings, disciplined approaches at the plate, and dominant pitching.”

The biggest takeaway for Milan was the 15-run second inning and the team’s patience and pressure with 12 walks and 6 stolen bases while the pitching staff also kept Skyline quiet all day.

Milan piled up 12 hits and consistently created scoring chances with walks, Higa said. Defensively/pitching-wise, Skyline managed just two hits, and their lone run was unearned.

Standout performances against Skyline included:

  • Reese Knox, who drove in five runs on three hits, fueling the offense all game.
  • Alexis Vance and Kenzie Chrysler had multiple hits; Vance also threw a scoreless relief inning.
  • Kendyll Fell got the win with 7 strikeouts over three innings (1 run, 0 earned).

On the 26th, Milan was supposed to have a double header against Bedford, but due to weather they only got in most of the first game and didn’t finish the last bottom half of the 7th. However, they did earn a 9-5 win.

Higa said they beat Bedford 9–5 after jumping out early (2–0 in the 1st, 3–0 in the 3rd), weathering a Bedford push, and then retaking control with a big 5th inning.

Milan had strong offensive production with 10 hits and 5 walks as well as clean defense with no errors. Higa said pitching battled through traffic, but held up for the win.

Timely extra-base hitting, good plate discipline and error-free defense played a big part in the win, Higa said. Also responding well after Bedford closed the gap was big.

Standout performances were:

  • Charleigh Meggison: 3-for-3 with a triple and two doubles, 5 RBI.

  • Knox: 3 hits, plus 2 walks.

  • Fell (Pitcher): win in 6 innings pitched, 7 strikeouts.

  • Chrysler: 8 defensive plays.
