Chelsea Police Intercept Suspects After Attempted Pharmacy Break-In

Chelsea Police Chief Kevin Kazyak used his report to the Chelsea City Council on March 23, 2026, to highlight a recent early morning incident and commend his department’s response.

“I’d like to take a minute to brag about the Chelsea Police Department,” Kazyak said.

According to Kazyak, the incident occurred early Friday morning when suspects targeted a medical facility on the campus of Chelsea Hospital.

“Approximately 230 in the morning, Friday morning, four suspects broke into the professional office building on the campus of the Chelsea hospital,” he said. “Suspects attempted to gain entry into the pharmacy, but due to recently installed security updates, thank goodness, they were unsuccessful.”

Kazyak credited prior security improvements for preventing access to the pharmacy.

“I have to give a shout out to the University of Michigan, their pharmacy they had been broken into last year. They took steps to increase the security and strengthening that particular pharmacy, and it paid off,” he said.

Hospital security alerted Chelsea Police, who quickly responded.

“Hospital security notified Chelsea police, who intercepted the suspect vehicle as it was fleeing the area,” Kazyak said.

The suspects abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot.

“The vehicle was located on old us 12, and all four subjects had fled the vehicle on foot,” he said.

Officers, working with multiple agencies, were able to apprehend two of the four suspects.

“Chelsea Police Department officers, with the help of Michigan State Police, Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department, Washtenaw County Canine Unit, and the Northfield Township drone unit, apprehended two of the four suspects that morning,” Kazyak said.

The investigation revealed the suspects and vehicle were linked to a broader regional pattern.

“The suspect vehicle, 2022 Chrysler Pacifica, was stolen out of Rochester Hills, and the license plate on the vehicle was stolen out of Detroit,” he said. “So this is not a local issue. This is a metro Detroit issue.”

Kazyak said the group is believed to be involved in multiple similar incidents.

“This group is suspected in break ins and pharmacies and smoke shops in Shelby, Novi, Davidson, Flat Rock and Michigan State University,” he said.

Chelsea Police are continuing to work with other agencies on the case.

“we are currently working with the Shelby Police Department, who helped us identify suspect number three, and our information has helped the Shelby Police Department identify two of their suspects,” Kazyak said.

He praised both his department and assisting agencies for their coordinated response.

“I’m very proud of not only the officers and dispatchers at night, but the rest of the CPD team who are helping tie up all the loose ends for the prosecution of these individuals,” he said.

Kazyak also expressed appreciation for outside support.

“I would like to take this time to again thank the Michigan State Police, Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office, both their deputies and the canine unit, as well as the Northfield Township Police Department for their assistance that morning,” he said.

He noted that cases like this often extend beyond local boundaries.

“So just let you know again, like the counterfeit case we had earlier, things come into Chelsea, the arrests that we make, the information that we glean off of this actually helps close a lot of other cases,” Kazyak said. “So we’re working with the other agencies to wrap this up, because this is not a local issue.”
