PUBLIC UTILITY OPERATOR

Are you curious about how science and engineering come together to provide safe drinking water and protect the environment? Do you enjoy working with laboratory testing, chemical and biological processes, and hands-on mechanical systems? If so, the City of Dexter has an exciting opportunity for you!

We’re looking for a full-time Public Utility Operator to join our Utilities Department team, helping to operate and maintain Dexter’s drinking water distribution system (five groundwater wells with iron filtration) and our Wastewater Treatment Facility (a conventional activated sludge system with headworks and tertiary filtration).

In this role, you’ll get to:

• Conduct water and wastewater testing and sampling, using lab results to guide real-world process control decisions.
• Maintain, repair, and operate pumps, treatment equipment, transmission systems, and more.
• Gain experience in both technical/laboratory sciences and hands-on field work.
• Read and maintain water meters while keeping critical systems running smoothly.
• Cross-train with our Department of Public Works, with opportunities to support roads, sidewalks, facilities, parks, snow removal, stormwater management, and solid waste activities—keeping Dexter a great place to live and work!

Schedule & Pay

• Monday–Friday, 7:00am–3:30pm
• Weekend coverage rotation with other operators required
• Full-time, non-exempt, Regular schedule:
• Starting wage: $21.49 – $24.19/hour + hourly license pay
• Comprehensive benefits package
