Dr. Robert “Bob” Armstrong, 86, of Albion, Michigan, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2025, surrounded by family.
Born in Xenia, Ohio, Bob was the eldest of five children. He worked on a farm and at a cement plant before earning degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry from Heidelberg College, Ohio State University, and Michigan State University. He completed post-doctoral work at Princeton and began teaching at the University of Michigan before dedicating his career to Albion College, where he built the Biochemistry program and mentored generations of students.
Bob’s passion for education extended beyond the college—he taught high school chemistry, led demonstrations for younger students, and participated in adult learning programs. He was known for his open-door policy, weekend study sessions, and welcoming students into his home.
Service was central to Bob’s life. He donated over 25 gallons of blood to the Red Cross and served on numerous boards, including the Albion Hospital, MSU Alumni Science Board, and Albion Forks Senior Center. Locally, he was active with Habitat for Humanity, the Albion Area Ambulance Service, and First United Methodist Church.
Bob loved travel, adventure, and connecting with people. With his wife of 62 years, Roberta “Bobbie,” he visited over 70 countries, making Aruba a beloved annual retreat.
He is survived by Bobbie; children Douglas (Joan) and Robin (Stephen); grandchildren Jackson, Zachary, Emily, and Megan; and siblings Thomas, Edward, Kathleen, and Kenneth.
A memorial service will be held October 6 at the Dancey House, Chelsea Retirement Community, 801 W. Middle St, Chelsea at 10 AM and October 11 at First United Methodist Church in Albion (visitation at 11 AM, service at noon, lunch to follow).
Memorial contributions may be made to the Dr. Robert Armstrong Biochemistry Endowment at Albion College.
