His Legacy… John Brian Ross, 74, passed away April 14, 2026. He was born on February 25, 1952, in Boston, Massachusetts to Robert Ross, a fighter pilot with the Marines during WWII, and Suzanne (Dessureault) Ross. Brian moved to Grand Rapids in middle school and went on to attend U of M, where he met his wife, Toni. Brian and Toni were married on October 12, 1977, in Clare, Michigan. Brian was a life-long lover of history. He earned his master’s degree in American history at U of M and received his P.H.D. at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Brian spent his career as a teacher and history professor and was incredibly passionate about history, especially American history and sports history. He wrote a book called “Baseball’s Greatest Comeback: The Miracle Braves of 1914”, based on Johnny “the Crab” Evers, Walter “Rabbit” Maranville, and George “Big Daddy” Stallings. In the last two years he was working on a screenplay in regard to them as well. Brian researched everything and was in constant pursuit of knowledge. He wanted those around him to learn and was always sharing history articles with his children and grandchildren. Brian adored his grandchildren and loved making family outings into wonderful learning activities. He was very passionate about what was happening in his city and was an avid city council participant. Brian was a lover of libraries and books. Brian was dearly loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed.

His Family… Brian will be missed by his wife, Toni Ross; his children, Jessica (Tim) Sperendi, Catherine (Josh) Rutan; sister, Colleen (Joe) Rossi; grandchildren, Oliver Rutan, Adaline Rutan, Eloise Rutan; numerous nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Suzanne Ross.

His Farewell…Brian’s Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, April 20, 2026, at 11:00AM (10:00AM gathering), at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 6805 Mast Road, Dexter, Michigan. Fr. Brendan Walsh will serve as Presider. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Red Cross.
