Mary Ann Steptoe, 94, of Dexter, Michigan, passed away peacefully on the evening of December 11, 2025, at Chelsea Retirement Community, surrounded by music, Christmas décor, and love.
Born March 3, 1931, in Pinckney, Michigan, to Ralph and Rose (Mroz) Harris, Mary Ann grew up on the shores of Portage Lake, where she developed a deep love for family, community, and the simple joys of home. She graduated from Pinckney High School and began building the life she cherished most.
On August 26, 1950, Mary Ann married the love of her life, William Steptoe, at Dexter United Methodist Church. Together, they built their forever home on Dan Hoey Road in Dexter in 1953, where they raised their family and created countless memories. Mary Ann worked at DAPCO, Sarns, and 3M, and was a devoted member of the Order of the Eastern Star for many years.
Mary Ann’s greatest joy was her family and bringing people together. Christmas was her favorite time of year, and she treasured hosting the annual Christmas party for Dexter’s Boy Scout Troop 448, where her husband served as longtime Scout Master. Her kitchen was always filled with the warmth of home-baked goods, lovingly made for family, friends, and neighbors. She delighted in canning and was particularly proud of her infamous “Sara Pickles,” a family favorite that carried her granddaughter’s name and her love in every jar.
Mary Ann is survived by her children: Robert (Margaret) Steptoe of Dexter; Bonnie (Stephen) Przelomski of Rocky Mount, NC; and David (Kimberley) Steptoe of Dexter. She was the beloved grandmother of Daniel (Tracie) Steptoe of Port Huron; Sara Steptoe of Dexter; Brett (Karah) Stocchi of Belleville; Erin (Taylor) Smith of Mebane, NC; Hannah (Joshua) Perry of Newport News, VA; and Joseph Przelomski of Cary, NC. She also leaves behind six cherished great-grandchildren: Allison, Margaret, and Wesley Steptoe; Ava Stocchi; and Serene and Eliza Smith.
